Description of the genus

Trees or shrubs, stellate hairy. Leaves alternate, lamina simple, dentate, serrate, often oblique. Inflorescence cymes, axillary, pedunclulate. Flowers white, pink or yellow, actinomorphic, bracteates; calyx 2-5 lobed or partite, lobes reflexed; petals 5, hooded, apex with a long deeply bifid liguliform appendage, valvate. Fruit capsules, sub-globose, ligneous, woody. Seeds small, endospermic.

Worldwide: Species 4 in tropical America.

Mozambique: 1 cultivated taxon.
