Links

This is a short list of websites which contain useful information relating to the flora of Mozambique.

A much more detailed collection of links, many of which are relevant to Mozambique, may be found on the Flora of Zimbabwe website.

Flora of Zimbabwe

The Flora of Zimbabwe web site is a sister site to this one.

Both use the same database with each site pulling appropriate information from the database.

Flora of Zambia

This is a third website which also uses the same database.

Flora Zambesiaca

Flora Zambesiaca is the primary flora of Mozambique, which is currently prepared under the aegis of Kew. In addition to Mozambique, it also covers Botswana, the Caprivi Strip, Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The web site consists of a searchable database of species with additional information extracted from the currently published volumes, a list of which may be found here.

Details of the volumes currently in print, together with details of other works on the flora of Africa, may be found on the Kew Books website.

Namibian Biodiversity Database

The Namibian Biodiversity Database aims to increase the availability of information about Namibian biodiversity. It covers a wide range of living organisms and not just plants.

The web site contains a searchable database of species together with pages on specific aspects such as aliens and the Succulent Karroo ecosystem.

Flora of Southern Africa

Although the area covered by this ongoing work (Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, S Africa and Swaziland) stops at the Limpopo, these volumes contain much of interest and relevance to Mozambican plants. Details of the current volumes may be found on the National Botanical Institute website. The NBI also produces a valuable journal, Bothalia and an occasional series of papers known as Strelitzia.

Flora of Tropical East Africa

This is the equivalent of Flora Zambesiaca which covers East Africa. Again, these volumes are of great relevance to us and are an essential purchase. Details may be found on the publisher’s website and also on the Kew site

AETFAT

This is the Association for the study of the taxonomy of tropical African plants. It holds a congress every 3 years alternating between Africa and Europe; the previous three were held in Harare in 1997, Meise, Belgium in 2000 and Addis Ababa in 2003.

Aetfat has some useful web sites, namely the link to the Aetfat Library in Brussels.

Sabonet

What is Sabonet? It is "a capacity-building network of southern African herbaria and botanic gardens with the objective of developing local botanical expertise." The regular, free newsletter has been a great boon. Of particular interest on this site is the list of publications and the list of emails of southern African botanists.

ILDIS

International Legume Database and Information Service. Provides world-wide data on legumes and includes a searchable database.

The National Herbarium

This site is about the National Herbarium of Zimbabwe (SRGH) and the National Botanic Gardens. There is comprehensive information about the herbarium, where it is, how to contact it, the aims and objectives and the various activities which are being undertaken.

There are links to other regional organisations such as Sabonet and Secosud and there are also a number of photographs of the herbarium buildings and the botanic gardens.

Aloe, Cactus and Succulent Society of Zimbabwe

This is another active Zimbabwean society which, through its journal Excelsa, has made a major contribution to the study of succulents.

Missouri Botanical Garden

A number of research projects are in progress in Africa.

Zambezi Society

The Zambezi Society is the only conservation group devoted solely to looking after the Zambezi, the finest and wildest river in Africa.

African Conservation Foundation

The African Conservation Foundation is dedicated to supporting and linking African conservation initiatives, groups and NGOs, with the aim to strengthen their capacity, build partnerships and promote effective communication and co-ordination of conservation efforts

There is much of interest on the site and I would recommend browsing through it.
