Description of the family

Herbs with a bulbous base. Leaves basal, linear. Flowers bisexual, actinomorphic, sometimes unisexual, ebracteate. Perianth of 6 similar segments in 2 whorls, deciduous, herbaceous. Stamens 6, in 2 series, opposite the segments; anthers sessile. Ovary superior. Mericarps 3-6, indehiscent, united at first, but separating from a central persistent axis when ripe.

Worldwide: 4 genera and 20 species, mostly temperate and cold zones.
