Description of the family

Aquatic herbs, with the brittle branches repeatedly forked. Leaves sessile in pseudowhorls of 3 or more, with an open folded basal sheath and a linear, dentate lamina; with 2 axillary scales. Flowers unisexual: male, a single stamen enveloped in bud by a closed spathe; female, a single ovoid carpel surrounded by a spathe or naked; ovule solitary; style filiform with 2-3 stigmas. Fruit a small narrow-ovoid nut.

Worldwide: 1 genus and c.32 species, cosmopolitan.
