Description of the family

Trees or shrubs. Stipules rudimentary. Leaves simple, opposite or ternate. Flowers bisexual, actinomorphic, in terminal or axillary cymes. Calyx a cylindrical tube. Petals 4-5, alternating with 4-5 pubescent scales. Stamens 4-5, alternating with the petals. Ovary inferior, 3-5-locular. Fruit a 3-5-locular false drupe with 1 seed per loculus.

Worldwide: 1 genus and 8 species, eastern and southern Africa.
