Description of the family

Floating aquatic plants with slender branched rootless rhizomes. Leaves dimorphic, borne in whorls of three, two floating, oblong to circular, entire, the third submerged, finely dissected, hairy and root-like. Sori in sporocarps, which are borne on the dissected submerged leaf.
