Description of the family

Herbs (in ours). Stipules present, persistent. Leaves opposite, compound. Flowers actinomorphic, bisexual, hypogynous. Sepals and petals 5 (in ours). Disk usually present. Ovary 5-locular. Fruit spiny (in ours), breaking up into indehiscent cocci.

Worldwide: 27 genera and 285 species, in tropical and warm areas, especially arid zones, sometimes in saline areas.
