Description of the family

Perennial climbers with tendril-tipped leaves. Leaves alternate along the stems, sheathing at the base; apex modified into a spirally coiled tendril. Flowers in terminal panicles, bisexual or unisexual, small, actinomorphic. Perianth segments 6, free, persistent. Stamens 6. Ovary superior, 3-locular. Style 3-lobed, short or absent. Fruit a berry, 1-3-seeded.

Worldwide: 1 genus in Old World tropics with one species in Africa, one in Madagascar and 2 in Asia and the Pacific.

Mozambique: 1 genus and 1 taxon.
