Description of the family

Dioecious trees or shrubs. Stipules present. Leaves alternate, palmately divided. Male inflorescences branched: tepals 2-4; stamens (in ours) 3-4. Female inflorescences: spherical or in a club-shaped head; tepals 2-3; pistil 1; stigma 1 with 1 ovule. Fruit adnate to the fleshy accrescent perianth forming a large unit.

Worldwide: 6 genera and 180 species, tropics.
