Description of the family

Erect or climbing shrubs, small trees, lianes or a rhizomatous shrublet. Stipules 0. Leaves alternate, 3-foliolate (Agelaea) or imparipinnate (Cnestis and Rourea); leaflets entire. Flowers bisexual, actinomorphic or subzygomorphic; androecium and gynoecium usually dimorphic. Sepals and petals 5. Stamens 10. Carpels 5 (in ours), free, 1-locular; only 1-3 ripening into fruit Fruit a follicle with 1 seed. Seed often arillate.

Worldwide: 12 genera and 180 species, tropics, especially Old World.
