Description of the family

Monoecious or dioecious, resinous, trees or shrubs. Mature leaves scale-like, appressed and decussate; juvenile leaves subulate, spreading and spirally or irregularly arranged. Male strobili with few, ± peltate, scales, bearing 2-many pollen-sacs. Female strobili with 1-12 woody or fleshy scales; ovules erect. Mature female strobili usually a dehiscent cone, but sometimes berry-like and indehiscent (Juniperus).

Worldwide: 20 genera and 125 species, ± cosmopolitan.
