Description of the family

Herbs or low shrubs. Stipules present, paired. Leaves opposite or whorled, simple. Flowers small, axillary, solitary or in small cymes, fascicles or whorled clusters, bisexual, actinomorphic. Sepals 3-5. Petals 3-5(-6). Stamens as many as or twice as many as the sepals; anthers 2-thecous. Ovary superior, 3-5-locular, multiovulate; styles 2-5, free. Fruit a septicidal capsule. Seeds without endosperm.

Worldwide: 2 genera and 34 species, mainly tropical, some temperate.
