Description of the genus

Perennial herbs, often decumbent, with creeping rhizomes which root at the nodes. Leaves simple, alternate or opposite, entire to dentate. Flowers in axillary 3-11-flowered fascicles, 4-merous. Calyx lobes 4, persistent. Petals 4. Fruit an indehiscent nutlet, with (in ours) 4-8 tuberculate ribs.

Worldwide: 4 species in tropical and warm regions.

Mozambique: 1 taxon.
