Description of the genus

Shrubs or trees, with white latex. Leaves opposite. Inflorescences 2, in the forks of the branches. Corolla creamy or yellow; lobes overlapping to the left. Anthers sagittate at the base. Carpels subspherical, free, connate at the base. Seeds surrounded by a yellow or orange aril.

Derivation of name: from the Madagascan words voa, fruit and acanga, guinea fowl, because of the spotted fruit.

Worldwide: 12 species in the tropical Old World.

Mozambique: 2 taxa.

Sthenias puncticornis
Voacanga africana
