Description of the genus

Short, acaulescent herb (in ours) with leaves in a basal rosette. Inflorescence a terminal narrow spike borne on a peduncle which bears alternate, ovate bracts from base to apex; bracts with membranous margin, fringed with woolly hairs. Calyx slightly zygomorphic, 5-lobed. Corolla 2-lipped. Fertile stamens 2 with 2-thecous anthers. Style branches 2. Capsule slightly beaked; seeds not borne on retinacula.

Worldwide: 17 species in tropical and warm regions

Mozambique: 1 taxon.
