Description of the genus

Annuals or perennials. Inflorescence of numerous stiff racemes scattered along a central axis. Spikelets several-flowered, laterally flattened, cuneate, disarticulating above the glumes and between the florets. Glumes 1-nerved, membranous, narrow, tapering to a mucro or awn, exceeding the lowermost lemma and often as long as the spikelet. Lemmas 3-nerved, conspicuously ciliate along the lateral nerves, 2-toothed at apex and awned from the sinus.

Worldwide: 7 species in tropical Africa and Arabia; also southern USA (Texas), Peru and the Galapagos Islands
