Kabuyea Brummitt

Description of the genus

Perennial herbs, acaulescent. Corms several superposed one above the other. Leaves c. 4, basal, closely enfolding the base of the scape and sheathed by 1 or more outer cataphylls; leaf laminas ± long-attenuate at the base into an indistinctly defined petiole; petiole shorter than or sometimes nearly equalling the lamina, or petiole absent in young leaves. Inflorescence scapose with flowers racemosely arranged; scape occasionally with a solitary sterile bract below the lowermost flower; raceme with scarious linear-triangular bracts deciduous at the fruiting stage. Tepals white, ± free to the base. Fruit a capsule with only one or occasionally 2 carpels developing a seed, globose, dehiscing by a complete longitudinal split. Seeds globose. One species in tropical East Africa.
