Description of the genus

Annual, tufted. Leaf blade expanded or rolled. Inflorescence a single cylindric spike on a hard, articulated rhachis, rhachis fragile; spikelets edgeways on sunk into rhachis but longer than internodes. Spikelets compressed, falling with glumes. Floret 1, membranous, glabrous.

Worldwide: 1 species native to the Mediterranean region, naturalised in southern Africa.
