Description of the genus

Annual or perennial herbs. Stems erect, slender, simple or branched at the apex. Basal leaves elliptic; stem leaves from elliptic-ovate (lower) to linear or linear-lanceolate (upper). Flowers 4-merous, axillary, in long or short racemes or crowded in terminal corymb-like clusters, rarely solitary. Calyx leathery, tubular, 8–12 ribbed; lobes 3-nerved. Corolla tube cylindric or narrowly funnel-shaped, with 4-ovate lobes. Stamens 4; filaments inserted below the middle of the corolla tube, filiform, slightly unequal; anthers oblong-ellipsoid, not twisted. Ovary oblong-ovoid, unilocular; ovules numerous; style filiform; stigma bilobed. Capsule membranous, oblong-obovoid, bivalved.

Worldwide: 3 species in tropical and South Africa

Mozambique: 1 taxon.
