Xylocarpus J. König

Description of the genus

Probably monoecious trees of mangrove swamps and coastal regions, often with pneumatophores and buttresses. Leaves paripinnate; leaflets entire. Inflorescence a compound cyme. Calyx 4-lobed to below the middle. Petals 4, free. Staminal tube bearing 8 included anthers and terminated by 8 appendages. Ovary 4-locular, with 2-4 ovules per loculus. Fruit a ± spherical, large, leathery capsule dehiscing by 4 valves and with a vestigial columella. Seeds 8-16, pyramidal or tetrahedral, without wings but with a thick corky outer layer.

Worldwide: 2 species, widespread in the Old World.
