Description of the genus

Lianas, high climbing, robust, glabrous; rhizome sympodial; stems terete, hard, usually equally branched. Leaf sheath tubular. Leaves distichous; lamina grass-like; apex extended into tendril; tendril simple, involutely coiled, hard. Inflorescence a panicle, terminal; flowers actinomorphic, 3-merous, small, whitish. Fruit drupaceous. Seeds 1 or 2, flattened; endocarp copious.

Derivation of name: whip-like, referring to the long flexible stems .

Worldwide: I species in Africa, Madagascar, Asia and the Pacific.

Mozambique: 1 taxon.
