Description of the genus

Erect or spreading, much-branched, monoecious, annuals or perennial herbs. Leaves alternate, petiolate. Ochrea membranous, caducous. Flowers unisexual; male flowers pedicellate in clusters on the upper part of branches or upper part of inflorescences; female flowers sessile in the axils below. Male flowers: perianth segments 5-6, free nearly to the base, spreading. Female flowers: perianth segments in 2 rows of 3, accrescent, the outer 3 each bearing a stout spine. Styles 3, widened and fimbriate at the tip. Nut trigonous.

Worldwide: 2 species, one in the Mediterranean area and the other native to South Africa and Namibia.

Mozambique: 1 taxon.
