Description of the genus

Perennial herb with leaves all basal. Leaves compound, 3-foliolate to 2-ternate. Inflorescences umbellate. Flowers actinomorphic, bisexual, with petaloid sepals, lacking true petals . Tepals c. 15, the outer smaller. Stamens numerous. Carpels numerous, 1-ovulate. Fruit of fleshy drupelets, with deciduous (non-persistent) styles.

Derivation of name: named after Thomas Knowlton (1691-1781), English horticulturalist and director of the then famous Botanic Gardens at Eltham

Worldwide: 8 species in eastern and southerm Africa.
