Unarmed trees. Stipules present. Leaves paripinnate; specialised glands on petiole and rhachis 0. Leaflets opposite, sessile, in (2-)4-many pairs. Inflorescence usually a terminal, simple or paniculate, raceme. Bracteoles 2, well-developed, completely enclosing the flowers in bud, persistent during flowering. Perianth 0 or of 1-7(-11) parts, usually 4-7 all sepaloid and of similar form, grading inwards from broader to narrower. Stamens usually 10. Pod dehiscent, oblong or boat-shaped, flat, soon glabrous, woody, the 2 valves becoming twisted after dehiscence; apex beaked. Seeds flat. Worldwide: 30 species in tropical Africa, 13 species in the Flora Zambesiaca region, 13 species in Zambia The larvae of the following species of insect eat species of this genus:
