Description of the genus

Trees, shrubs or suffrutices. Stipules linear. Leaves paripinnate; leaflets opposite, ± sessile. Inflorescences of terminal or axillary racemes. Bracteoles well developed, enveloping the flower bud, opposite, valvate, petaloid (pink or white), persistent. Sepals minute or 0. Petals 1(-3). Stamens 3(-6); staminodes sometimes present. Ovary with 1-5 ovules. Pods woody, flattened, glabrous, dehiscent with a wing-like ridge on the upper suture.

Worldwide: 11 species in tropical Africa, 2 species in the Flora Zambesiaca region, 2 species in Zambia.
