Description of the genus

Small trees. Leaves entire. Flowers zygomorphic, in small axillary, shortly pedunculate, clusters; peduncle always adnate to the petiole. Sepals 5. united. Petals 5, unequal, joined at the base to the stamens to form an unequal 5-lobed tube; 2 lobes 2-fid; three entire. Fertile stamens 2-3; sterile stamens 2. Ovary sessile, 2-3-locular. Fruit an ovoid drupe.

Worldwide: 28 species in tropical America (mostly) and tropical Africa.
