Description:
Shrub or small evergreen tree. Bark smooth, mottled grey-brown; cloudy latex present. Leaves alternate, elliptic to somewhat obovate, mostly 10-15 cm long, glossy dark green above, apex drawn into a drip-tip; veins distinct but sunken above; margin shallowly to strongly serrate in the upper two-thirds, sub-entire near the base. Flowers unisexual, mostly on different trees; male flowers in small axillary spikes; female flowers solitary. Fruit, subglobose, fleshy, 2-lobed, c. 10 mm in diameter, pale whitish green, black when ripe.
Notes: In Mozambique only known from the Inhamitanga Forest where it is locally surprisingly common but should be considered vulnerable.
Derivation of specific name: usambarensis: of the Usambara Mountains, Tanzania
Habitat: In sand forest.
Altitude range: 190 - 220 m
Flowering time:Apr -May (also recorded in Dec)
Worldwide distribution: From Guinea to DRC; Kenya and Tanzania. This species is, in Southern Africa, only known from the Inhamitanga Forest in Sofala, Mozambique and a single record from Zimbabwe.
