Description:
Perennial herb, up to 0.9 m. Leaves basal, 3-foliolate to 2-pinnate, ultimate leaflets lobed to almost entire, hairy below. Flowers on a long, branched, leafless flowering stem, white, sometimes tinged with pink, c. 2-3 cm in diameter, with a yellow spherical mass of stamens.
Notes: When crushed, the leaves release a highly irritant sap, containing a chemical called anemonol.
Derivation of specific name: transvaalensis: from the Transvaal, South Africa
Habitat: In damp places in montane grassland and bracken scrub.
Altitude range: 1500 - 2100 m
Flowering time:
Worldwide distribution: Southern Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and northern South Africa.
