Description:
Erect, somewhat spreading perennial herb, up to 1.2 m. Leaves simple, near linear to elliptic, apex mucronate, finely hairy with longer hairs on the undersurface. Inflorescences terminal, flowers purple with lighter, salmon-pink standard; calyx lobes pubescent and ciliate. Fruit 7-15 mm long, well exserted from the calyx, constricted between the seeds, surface fairly smooth with very obscure transverse ridges, mostly velvety.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: zeyheri: named after Carl Zeyher, 1799 - 1858, a German naturalist
Habitat: A species of open woodland and grassland, often on burnt ground or in damp sandy soil.

Worldwide distribution: Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe. Widespread in tropical Africa, from Sierra Leone and Ethiopia to South Africa.
