Description:
Herbaceous perennial twining climber with slender, finely pubescent to velvety stems 0.6–4 m long, growing from a woody rootstock. Leaves 3-foliolate; leaflets oblong, oblong-obovate or oblong-elliptic, mostly 4–9 cm long, sparsely appressed pubescent above, paler and almost hairless to more densely appressed pubescent or velvety beneath; petioles 2–5 cm long; stipules linear, 3–5 mm long. Flowers in lax 2–10-flowered racemes on peduncles up to 17.5 cm long; bracts and bracteoles ovate-lanceolate, 1.5–2.5 mm long. Calyx pubescent with lobes elliptic-lanceolate, 3.5–6 mm long, the lowest longest. Standard whitish, pale lilac or pinkish-mauve and purple, elliptic or oblong-obovate, 1–1.2 cm long, hairless. Pods linear-oblong, mostly 3–6 cm long, finely appressed pubescent, usually 6–12-seeded.
Notes: Only recorded from Divisions N and Z in Flora Zambesiaca volume 3-5 (2001) but listed for M and GI divisions Wild Flowers of Mozambique (Bandeira, Bolnick and Barbosa, 2007).

Habitat: Open woodland and bushland.
Altitude range: 25 - 900 m

Worldwide distribution: Ghana, northern Nigeria, CAR, DRC, Eritrea, Sudan, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, north-eastern South Africa, Mascarene Islands, India, China and New Guinea.
