Description:
Perennial herb, 10–35 cm. tall. Stems hairless or sparsely hairy, sparingly branched, arising from a large ellipsoid tuber. Leaves ovate to lanceolate in outline, 2·5–14 cm long, sparsely to fairly densely hairy; margin often very shallowly lobed, always strongly serrated; petioles 0·7–8 cm long; stipules ovate-oblong, 4–10 mm long, fimbriate; bulbils sometimes present in leaf-axils. Flowers in terminal and axillary branched inflorescences; peduncles 2–6 cm long; primary branches 1·3–2·5 cm long. Bracts obovate, 4–12 mm long, green, pink or brown, persistent and conspicuous. Flowers unisexual, orange or rarely yellow; male flowers with 4 tepals; female flowers with 5 tepals, ovary oblong, 4·5–9, 3-winged. Capsule ellipsoid or cylindrical, 6–28 mm excluding wings; wings triangular, 6–14 mm wide, subequal.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: sutherlandii: after Peter Cormack Sutherland (1822–1900), medical doctor from Aberdeen, Scotland, Surveyor-General of Natal and plant collector in South Africa but also in Canada.
Habitat: In wet rock crevices, deep ravines, near waterfalls.
Altitude range: 910 - 1800 m
