Description:
Much-branched annual or perennial herb with somewhat scrambling habit, up to 2 m tall. Stems 4-angled, pale green to dull red, more or less densely covered with spreading bristly hairs up to 7 mm long, even longer at the nodes. Leaves opposite, up to 9 × 2.5 cm, more or less narrowly ovate-lanceolate to elliptic-oblong, light green on both surfaces or darker above, appressed hairy, 3-5-veined from the base; margin entire to finely crenate with long spreading bristly hairs; petiole 2-10 mm, hairy. Flowers in terminal and axillary clusters; calyx with long spreading bristly hairs; petals up to 17 × 13 mm, pale to bright purple; stamens all similar, yellow.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: senegambiensis: of Senegambia (now Senegal and Gambia) in West-Africa, where the type specimen was found.
Habitat: Along river banks, forest margins and in grassland, often in moist places.
