Description:
Suffrutex with stems up to 1 m tall, rarely scandent up to 2-3 m, growing from a strong woody rootstock. Young part with shaggy yellowish-brown hairs. Leaves opposite, obovate, obovate-oblong or elliptic, 4.5-14.5 cm long, lower leaves much smaller and often almost round, sparsely rough-hairy above,more densely so on the veins beneath; margin entire, rarely undulate-crenate; petiole up to c. 2.5 cm long with hairs similar to the branches. Inflorescence terminal, subglobose, up to 4.5 cm in diameter (excluding the corollas); bracts ovate to lanceolate; calyx lobes all similar, elliptic to lanceolate, 16-21 mm long, pale green near the base becoming purplish towards the apex. Corolla mostly white, sometimes creamy-white, pinkish or greenish, scented; tube 8.5-14 cm long; lobes oblong up to 17 8 mm; style and stamens exserted for c. 3.5 cm. Fruit c. 10 mm long, shiny black.

Habitat: In deciduous woodland and wooded grassland, in dry coastal woodland and along roadsides, usually in sandy soils.
