Description:
Aromatic perennial herb or shrub, 1-2.5 m. Leaves petiolate; lamina 5-12 × 4-7 cm, narrowly to broadly ovate, ± glabrous to densely pubescent, gland-dotted; apex acute; margin regularly crenate. Inflorescence a spike 7-10 cm. Bracts 4-5 mm, linear to spathulate, ciliate. Calyx sparingly pubescent, reddish-purple; teeth 8-10 mm, becoming sharply spiny after flowering. Corolla 12-20 mm, gentian-blue, rarely whitish.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: urticifolia: nettle-leaved
Habitat: In rocky ground and on streambanks or in grassland in the transition zone between vlei and woodland; also sometimes in open miombo woodland.
Altitude range: 700 - 2100 m
