Description:
Erect perennial herb, up to c. 80 cm high, growing from a woody rootstock, all parts densely covered in appressed white felt-like hairs. Stems branching, often reddish. Leaves sessile, clasping the stem, oblong to lanceolate, c. 5 cm long, greyish-green, densely hairy on both surfaces, mucronate at the apex; margin slighlt rolled under. Capitula terminal, solitary or a few together. Involucral bracts 3-4-seriate, shiny golden-yellow, brownish tinged on the outside, lanceolate-triangular; inner up to 1.5 cm long. Florets numerous, yellow, c. 3.4 mm long.

Derivation of specific name: buchananii: after John Buchanan (1855 – 1896), Scottish horticulturist, missionary, farmer and plant collector in Malawi, who became Acting British Consul to Central Africa. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Buchanan_(settler).
Habitat: In grassland, often in damp places, where it may for extensive colonies.
