Description:
Shrub or tree up to 10 m tall. Leaves alternate, lanceolate, ovate to oblong-obovate, up to 14 cm long, hairless; margin entire; petiole long and slender, up to 6 cm long, deeply grooved along the top. Flowers in branched subterminal heads, small, white. Fruit somewhat depressed globose, 4-5 mm long, tipped by the persistent style.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: petiolaris: with a (distinct) petiole
Habitat: Occurring mostly on coral based soils in littoral and coastal scrub but also in riverine forest and dense woodland on limestone somewhat further from the coast.

Worldwide distribution: Coastal Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, Madagascar and Mauritius, tropical Asia and tropical Australia.
