Description of the genus

Shrubs or trees. Leaves opposite, paler beneath when dry. Flowers solitary or in few-many-flowered cymes. Calyx: tube subspherical; lobes 5, as long as or longer than the corolla tube (in ours), spathulate, obtuse. Corolla with a cylindric tube; lobes with an apiculate apex, usually reflexed. Ovary 5-locular; ovules 1 per loculus. Fruit with 1-5 pyrenes.

Worldwide: 5 species in tropical eastern and southern Africa

Mozambique: 4 taxa.
