Description:
Climbing herb, stems striate, with long glandular hairs and sometimes sparsely puberulous; tendrils present. Leaves 3–5-foliolate; petioles up to 8 cm long; leaflets elliptic, up to 12 cm long, hairless on both surfaces but often with a few stalked glands on the midrib; margin crenate-serrate; petiolules up to 1 cm long; stipules ovate-lanceolate, up to 2 cm long. Inflorescences lax, axillary on peduncle up to 8 cm long, puberulous and with long scattered glandular hairs; pedicels up to 1 cm long, densely pubescent; bracts and bracteoles more or less linear-lanceolate, up to 7 mm long, puberulous at least on the margins. Flowers greenish, orange- to red-tipped, puberulous; style 2 mm long, apex capitate. Fruit c. 1 × 0·7 cm, puberulous, sometimes also with scattered long glandular hairs(?)
Notes: In the field specimens often are characteristically coloured dark purple-red on all joints such as leafnodes, joints of petioles and petiolules, stipules and inflorescence branches.
Derivation of specific name: kirkianum: named after Dr John Kirk, who accompanied David Livingstone on his Zambezi expedition of 1858
Habitat: Thickets, woodland and riverine fringes.
