Description:
Perennial climbing herb, growing from a hemi-spherical tuber, up to 20 × 10 cm. Stems annual, twining, up to 1 m long, velvety. Leaves opposite, ovate-elliptic, ovate or obovate, 5-11 cm long, sometimes longer, velvety, thinly textured to leathery, dark green above, pale green below; petiole 10-40 mm long. Flowers in pseudo-axillary, 10-15-flowered, compact clusters. Corolla lobes reflexed, ovate, 5-12 mm long, greenish-yellow to green with reddish-brown to purple-brown markings near the base, hairy on the outside. Corona pale yellow to pale green, hairless; lobes 3-segmented; central segment 2-5 mm long, filiform; lateral segments 1-2 mm long. Fruit a single follicle, rarely paired, narrowly ovoid, 4-5.5 cm long, tapering.

Derivation of specific name: welwitschii: named after the Austrian botanist, Friedrich Martin Welwitsch (1806-1872)
Habitat: In grassy clearings in miombo woodland.
Altitude range: Up to 1600 m
