Description:
Soft-wooded shrubby perennial, up to 1.5 m and sometimes taller. Stems slightly succulent, rounded-4-angled, erect, brown to purplish, sometimes yellowish near the inflorescence, more or less densely pubescent and with reddish glands, often almost leafless at flowering time. Leaves fleshy, obovate to spathulate, 15-30mm long, yellowish, browinish or whitish, hairy and with some pale glands beneath; margin crenate; petiole 2-5 mm long. Inflorescence simple or branched, fairly dense. Calyx 2 mm long, densely pubescent, sometimes yellowish with pale reddish sessile glands. Corolla 2-lipped, almost white, pale blue or purple, 6-10 mm long, pubescent and with red glands on the lobes.
Notes: Leaves and inflorescence stain the fingers reddish-brown when crushed.
Derivation of specific name: sanguineus: blood-red, referring to the red-staining dye exuding from plants when crushed
Habitat: On exposed granite hills
Altitude range: 300 - 2000 m
