Description:
Multi-stemmed, succulent, spiny shrubs or small trees. Trunk swollen at base. Leaves obovate, alternate and petiolate on long shoots, sessile and fasciculate on short shoots; folded upwards along the mid rib, green above, much paler below, covered in short greyish hairs on both surfaces. Flowers solitary in the leaf axils, large, white, pink or cream. Corolla with long curved tube and with spur at base. Stamens 4. Fruit a flattened woody capsule, notched at the base. Seeds winged.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: lugardii: after Major Edward James Lugard (1865-1957), British-born plant collector who collected extensively in Botswana.
