Description:
Shrub or small bushy tree, to 5 m. Stems brown-hairy, at least when young, armed with prickles. Leaves large: petiole and rhachis up to 50 cm, bearing, often paired, reflexed prickles beneath and straight prickles above; pinnae 3-10 pairs; leaflets 1.3 - 4 cm long, 6-9 pairs per pinna, ovate to elliptic, often asymmetric, usually brown-hairy especially when young. Stipules leafy and conspicuous. Racemes up to 35 cm. Sepals brown-hairy. Petals yellow to greenish-yellow, the upper one broader and stouter than the others. Pod 4.5-8 cm, densely stiffly spiny, tardily dehiscent. Seeds usually 1-2 per pod, subspherical, leaden-grey, hard, with transverse parallel markings like fine cracks.
