Description of the family

Annual or perennial herbs, sometimes shrubs or trees. Stipules present or 0. Leaves alternate or in a cluster, digitate or pinnate. Flowers in cymes, pseudumbels or solitary, bisexual, hypogynous, actinomorphic. Sepals and petals 5. Stamens 10(-15), 2(-3)-seriate. Styles 5, separate. Ovary superior, 5-locular with 2-many ovules.Fruit a dehiscent capsule.

Worldwide: 6 genera and 775 species, tropical and temperate.

Mozambique: 2 genera and 12 taxa.
