Annual or perennial herbs. Stipules present or 0. Leaves alternate or in a cluster, digitate or pinnate. Flowers in cymes, pseudumbels or solitary, bisexual, hypogynous, actinomorphic. Sepals and petals 5. Stamens 10(-15), 2(-3)-seriate. Ovary superior, 5-locular. Fruit a dehiscent capsule.

Worldwide: 6 genera and 775 species, tropical and temperate.
