Description of the genus

Perennial herbs or small shrubs, prostrate or decumbent, with succulent, green stems. Leaves opposite and decussate (rarely alternate in inflorescence), flat, ovate with cordate base (in ours). Flowers solitary or in few-flowered cymes. Sepals 4. Petals 4, united at base. Ovary with axile placentas; stigmas 4. Fruit a 4-locular capsule, without marginal wings.

Worldwide: 4 species, South African

Mozambique: 1 cultivated taxon.
