Description of the genus

Trees. Leaves large, palmate. Flowers very large, borne singly or in twos or threes at the ends of branches. Calyx persistent. Petals 5, linear. Stamens very many (200-700), united in a long tube below, separate above. Fruit a large heavy, woody 5-celled capsule.

Worldwide: 2 species, native to tropical America

Mozambique: 1 cultivated taxon.
