Unarmed trees. Stipules pinnate. Leaves 2-pinnate without glands on the petiole and rhachis. Pinnae and leaflets strictly opposite. Flowers in short, axillary, corymbose racemes. Sepals 5. Petals (1,3) 5 (in ours); 4 equal, the upper differing in shape and colour. Stamens 10. Pods linear-oblong, flattened, dehiscent; valves woody, septate between the many seeds. Seeds transverse, oblong, subcylindric to flattened and oblong-elliptic. Derivation of name: Refers to the conspicuous claw of the petals Worldwide: 12 species in tropical Africa, Madagascar and India Mozambique: 1 cultivated taxon. |
