Description of the genus

Evergreen trees. Leaves imparipinnate, alternate; leaflets several to many, alternate or subopposite, entire. Flowers small, borne in short clusters, sometimes on the branches or beneath the leaves. Sepals 5. Petals 5, white, red or purple. Stamens 10. Fruit pendulous, fleshy, lobed or furrowed longitudinally.

Derivation of name: after Averrhoes, 1149-1217, Arabian physician.

Worldwide: 2 species from tropical Asia

Mozambique: 1 cultivated taxon.
