Description of the genus

Terrestrial herbs; offsets or stolons often present. Leaves in spreading rosettes, linear; margins toothed with a sharp point at the end. Inflorescence an erect, pine-cone-shaped, dense head usually with a tuft of bracts at the top. Flowers sessile, red or violet. Fruit fleshy; apex usually with a tuft of leafy bracts.

Worldwide: 8 species in tropical America

Mozambique: 1 cultivated taxon.
