Description of the genus

Trees, bark greyish-brown. Leaves bipinnate; leaflets many, alternate, paired, small, margins entire. Inflorescence solitary or sometimes paired spiciform racemes, axillary, pedicels short. Flowers small, white or yellowish; sepals 5, connate, campanulate; petals 5 almost distinct or basally connate, valvate, lanceolate; stamens equal or slightly longer than petals. Fruit pods, linear, compressed, falcate, or curved or spirally twisted, longitudinally dehiscent into 2 valves. Seeds 10-100 small, hard, red or red and black.

Worldwide: 12 species in tropical and sub-tropical Asia to N Australia and Polynesia.

Mozambique: 1 cultivated taxon.
